The City of Key West collaborated with Jacobs to develop a biosolids composting pilot project at the Key West Wastewater Treatment Plant. This project aimed to address the significant hauling and disposal costs of wastewater solids and yard waste materials. The aerated static pile (ASP) composting method was employed, following approval from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The pilot study, conducted from February to March 2022, was supervised by trained personnel and aimed to produce Class AA biosolids compost. This presentation will share the results of the pilot study, including analytical data on the compost product and insights from compost marketing efforts to assess the feasibility of establishing a full-scale composting program in Key West.
