This case study explores Princeton University’s efforts to expand organics recycling from pre-consumer to post-consumer waste, supporting institutional sustainability goals. Through a state DEP grant, university teams collaborated with researchers and industry partners to conduct food waste audits, launch a collection campaign, and test composted materials in an in-vessel composting system. As a result, Princeton reduced landfill waste by 50% in a retail dining café by adopting certified compostable products and improving waste collection and education. The study provides insights on organic material volume, contamination risks, and impacts on composting quality.
